Sitting in a field for an hour or two, trying to record first in pencil and then in paint the expanse of what lies in front of me, I find to be the most challenging exercise in organizing, split-second decision-making, and gathering to myself all of my faculties.
After such a session, I feel permanently bonded with the place. As one landscape painter said, "Paintings are poems, not police reports."
Since moving to the Berkshires, I have developed an active love affair with the land, and have reserved a special place in my heart for abandoned farm equipment, such as tractors and wheelbarrows.
