These images are from the "The Enchanted Forest", a series of intimate landscapes photographed during my own healing journey through what is called "Environmental Illness". These photographs are my souvenirs.
I committed to walking in the woods every day, wherever I was, for an entire year. Ten years later, I still do this often.
At first, I just needed to get into some fresh air. The heat in my house felt "toxic", the city air was draining to my energy, and I was filled with a kind of rage I knew was larger than my own. The woods felt instantly like home to me. I felt cradled in the Mother.
At the beginning of each walk, I would pray and ask what the woods might have to teach me about surviving in this artificially created world. Answers often came — in the form of a pattern of leaves on the surface of a pond; the song of a stream; a particular ice formation or a figure created by the branches of a dead tree. I was continually drawn to water, and would often stand by streams, imagining the clarifying waters running through my body, cleansing my blood and cell walls of the accumulated poisons. In this state of heightened awareness, I was shown little pieces of magic.
I believe this magic is abundantly available to anyone who takes the time to enter the woods as one would enter a chapel. All that is needed is to suspend the chatter of the mind, to walk slowly, and stop often.
